MKU Short Pump Owners | Ed and Sun Burhop
Ed and Sun Burhop opened the Montessori Kids Universe of Short Pump in the fall of 2019.
Sun was born a refugee in Thailand, her family was sponsored to the United States when she was a child. She spent most of her life in Milwaukee, WI before relocating to the Short Pump Area in 2017. Sun spent many years in Restaurant and Salon Management prior to owning a salon in Milwaukee for six years. Since moving to Short Pump, she has worked in childcare and has launched the RVA Social Moms Group. Sun is also a board member for the non-profit group Asian American Society of Central Virginia, this group seeks to educate children around Richmond and spread cultural awareness.
Ed grew up in Milwaukee, WI and has worked in finance and accounting for a decade. Ed holds an MBA in Finance from Marquette University, he also holds the designation of Certified Public Accountant in the State of Virginia.
Ed and Sun met in July 2009 and married in November 2012 in Hawaii. Sun gave birth to William in 2014 and Freddie in 2017. They spend their free time with family and friends, as well as volunteering around the community.
In 2018, the Burhop’s realized the demand for a Premium Montessori Curriculum in the Short Pump area and embarked on a mission to spread the teachings of Maria Montessori. The children of Short Pump now have access to a comprehensive Montessori and Reggio education!
MKU Short Pump Head of School | Ms. Nicole
Nicole has a current CDA credential, Associate’s Degree in General Studies with a specialization in teacher education, and a Career Studies Certificate in Elementary Education. She is highly knowledgeable in all (including Montessori) childcare philosophies that determine a quality environment for children. She has a passion for Early Education, particularly in a Montessori setting. She believes children learn through play-based and hands-on learning experiences facilitated by a high level of teacher-child interaction. She has worked as an early educator in the childcare industry for almost 15 years, ten of which have been as a director of a school. She also has a lifetime of experience caring for and nurturing children in her personal life through teaching Sunday school, Bible school, and volunteering at high-risk centers. She is currently in the beginning stages of obtaining formal Montessori credentials, and continues other field-related professional development throughout each year.
MKU Short Pump | Ms. Kitty
Ms. Kitty has five years of experience in the childcare industry, including Montessori experience in Northern Virginia. Kathleen (Ms. Kitty) grew up in Northern Virginia and moved to Richmond to attend Virginia Commonwealth University. She spends her free time studying and hanging out with family and her pet yorkie.
